TG PAWs: Simon
Breed: Italian Greyhound
How old is your pet and how long have you had it?
16yrs, and we’ve had him since he was 4 months old
Fun facts about the breed:
They are called Italian Greyhounds not because they are from Italy, but because during the renaissance many Italian nobles had portraits made with them holding their Italian Greyhounds. The breed is much older than that. They can reach speeds of up to 35 mph. They are often called Iggies or IG’s.
What are 3 words to describe your pet's personality?
Independent, curious, happy-go-lucky
What’s your pet’s favorite thing to do?
Bark at us after we’ve eaten at night for his after-dinner chewy.
Do you have a fun story about your pet’s background?
When we were looking to adopt another dog, we were looking for a whippet, but had decided that we were not interested in Italian Greyhounds. Simon came up on the Wisconsin Humane Society website as a whippet, but had no photo. We ran down and found that he, indeed, was not a whippet. We ended up adopting him anyway because he was so cute and got along with our current dog so well.
Any other fun things you want to share about your pet?
The photo of Simon above appeared in a book titled “Dog Joy” published in 2009.
As a “blue” IG (“blue”is the name for the gray colored Iggies) Simon suffers from alopecia, which means he has very little fur, mostly just where he has white fur. Alopecia (baldness) is common in “blue” Iggies. This means he gets to wear pajamas and t-shirts a lot, and he hates having us put them on him.
